チャップマン先生にインタビュー
皆さん、こんにちは。教育学部３年のなっつです。今回は教育学科のチャップマン先生に英語でインタビューをしました。

―This time, I would like to conduct an interview in English with Associate Professor Chapman from the Department of Education.
―What is your impression of the Department of Education students?
Prof. Chapman： They are kind and usually serious.
―What are some tips for learning English?
Prof. Chapman： One is watching TV and movies in English. Especially dramas or everyday conversations. News is tough.
European students learn from TV. Watch short clips, like learning standard conversations. They don't use difficult words. Sitcoms like 'Friends' are good too. I think dramas themed around school or university are best.
Watching short clips around 2 minutes long repeatedly is best. Step 1: Watch with Japanese subtitles. Step 2: Watch with English subtitles. Step 3: Try shadowing without subtitles. Everyone tries desperately to watch for an hour, but they get tired and stop after just one session. Short clips are best.
―What about animated movies?
Prof. Chapman: Nice. For example, in Toy Story, the situation is that Buzz doesn't think he's a toy. Woody tells him, "You are a toy." Understanding the intonation, situation, and context in such scenes helps you think, "Is it okay to say it like this?" For example, in Toy Story, it might sound a bit childish, but watching it helps you understand how to greet friends. Pixar movies don't use bad language or hurtful words. I think this is useful.
English karaoke is also good. Learn one English song to start. Memorizing by ear, or shadowing while watching subtitles on YouTube.
―What inspired you to become an English teacher?
Prof. Chapman： I came to Japan through the JET Program. To Nagahama City in Shiga Prefecture. I taught high school students.
―So why did you come to Japan?
Prof. Chapman： I was an exchange student. In Shiga. That's how I came to love Japan. Because of its long history.
―Why did you come to like Japan?
Prof. Chapman： Because I like temples. I especially like Asian art, and Buddhist statues.
My neighbor was from Hong Kong. That influenced me, so I like Asian art and Buddhist statues. That's why I also came to like Japan.
―How did you learn Japanese?
Prof. Chapman: I studied Japanese every day for two months before coming to Japan. So, for the first month or two, I could only say a word or two, like, "What's this?" or "How much is this?" My friends were very kind. That's why I grew to love Japan so much.
One more thing. Every day, you can learn something new. One thing each day. It might be a new kanji, a new word, or a new idea.
―Do you have any message for students?
Prof. Chapman： No one starts out perfect. No one is perfect from the beginning, so just do your best. Do what you can.
Students should learn phrases, not just words. Phrases, not just words. Memorize sentences and phrases like "How are you?" and "It's nice weather today."

●教育学部の学生について
親切でまじめな学生が多いという印象です。
●英語学習のこつ
英語のテレビや映画を見ることが効果的です。特に日常会話がよく出てくるドラマがおすすめです。短いクリップ（2分程度）を繰り返し見るのが良いでしょう。
ステップ：①日本語字幕 → ②英語字幕 → ③字幕なしでシャドーイング
『トイ・ストーリー』などの映画は言葉遣いが優しく、友達との挨拶などの表現を学ぶのに向いています。
英語の曲をカラオケで歌うのもおすすめです。好きな英語の歌を耳で覚えたり、字幕を見てシャドーイングしたりすると良いでしょう。
●教師になったきっかけ
「JETプログラム」で滋賀県長浜市に来て、高校生に英語を教えたことが始まりです。
＊JETプログラム...外国の若者を日本に招いて、学校で英語を教えたり、地域で国際交流活動を行ったりする国際交流事業。
●日本に来た理由
交換留学生として滋賀に滞在した時に、日本の歴史に魅了されました。
●日本が好きになった理由
特に寺や仏像などのアジア美術が好きです。香港出身の隣人の影響もあり、アジア文化に興味を持つようになりました。来日前に、２ケ月間日本語を毎日勉強しましたが、最初は簡単な言葉しか話せませんでした。しかし、周囲の人の優しさに触れて日本が大好きになりました。毎日ひとつ、新しいことを学ぶことが大切ですね。
●学生へのメッセージ
最初から完璧な人はいないので、自分にできることを精一杯やることが大切です。単語だけでなく、フレーズや文章で覚えるようにすると良いです。
